Voices of Leadership: Greg Shoemaker, Cargill
USFRA’s board of directors is a group of leaders who not only guide the organization but also embody the spirit and innovation of American agriculture. They bring expertise, passion, and a collaborative spirit that drives USFRA forward.
Greg Shoemaker, North America Senior Director at Cargill and USFRA board member, talks about his role and the value he sees in being part of USFRA.
Message from Kevin
Agriculture possesses something no other sector can claim: the ability to address society’s most pressing challenges, all at once. Those include food and energy security, rural prosperity and building resilient supply chains. But none of it happens unless farmers can keep farming. Our job at USFRA is to make the case for farmers and ranchers with facts and evidence, and to make it wherever those challenges are being discussed.
This summer and fall have taken us from Capitol Hill to New York City and on to Rome, as you will read about in this issue. Our landmark report, Fueling Agriculture: Biofuels as the Catalyst, is a strong proof point. It shows that when farmers have new markets, the benefits include improved farmer incomes, stronger rural economies, as well as improved food and energy security.
Next up, USFRA will be speaking on panels in Barcelona for the World Biofuels, Ethanol & Feedstocks Conference, and we’ll bring a delegation to COP31 in Turkey. Decisions about farmers, ranchers and agriculture are made in these rooms, and they’re better when the people who grow the food and fuel are part of them.
I also invite you to watch this month’s Voices of Leadership video, where USFRA board member Greg Shoemaker shares more about his role at Cargill and the value he sees in being part of USFRA.
Lastly, please explore our new and improved website at USFRA.com.
Thank you for your continued support.

USFRA Takes the Evidence of Agriculture’s Potential Around the World
The people deciding how the world feeds and fuels itself are gathering in forums far from the farm, and those decisions are better when farmers, ranchers and facts are part of the conversation. That’s why USFRA keeps showing up, both here and abroad.
A great example is our landmark report by S&P Global Energy, Fueling Agriculture: Biofuels as the Catalyst. More than four months after its launch, it’s still driving conversation and changing the narrative about the benefits of biofuels in the U.S. and abroad. USFRA leaders have shared its findings at events and in media interviews, highlighting how biofuels can strengthen the farm economy, advance energy security, and support rural communities. Recent stops include:
Climate Week NYC: The team shared insights across more than 20 sessions with attendees from 78 countries.
FAO in Rome: USFRA Board Member Doug Berven of POET and Solutions from the Landpresident Ernie Shea presented the study’s findings during the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s (FAO) Science and Innovation Forum 2026.
Next stops: Barcelona, Turkey, and Brussels
A second rollout of the biofuels report is being planned in Europe, where attitudes toward imported crop-based feedstocks remain somewhat hostile due to concerns over Indirect Land Use Change and Food vs. Fuel. In November, the team will travel to Barcelona for the World Biofuels, Ethanol & Feedstocks Conference. USFRA CEO Kevin Burkum will headline a presentation, “Greener Biofuels: Cutting Carbon in Feedstock Production,” and Doug Berven will speak on a panel, “Global Market Dynamics: Trade, Policy and Capacity.”
As an official observer organization of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, USFRA is bringing a delegation to COP31 in Antalya, Turkey, and will co-host a side event, “Scaling the Circular Bioeconomy: Agricultural Solutions to Climate Change.” Being held on Wednesday, Nov. 18, this official side event will feature USFRA chair Michael Crinion as a speaker who will provide key findings from USFRA’s biofuels report.
USFRA is partnering with Solutions from the Land, Corn Refiners Association, Korea University, National Council for Climate Change Sustainable Development and Public Leadership and U.S. Grains & BioProducts Council on the event.
Lastly, USFRA and partners are planning briefings with EU Commission leaders in December.
